Big Pottery of Raccoon Dog (Tanuki) (1F)

There is a big statue of raccoon dog (Tanuki) at the entrance.  This is statute is popular picture spot for foreign travellers.  The pottery is called (Shiragayaki), and is counted as one of 6 old pottery kiln in Japan.  In 1951, when Showa Emperor visited, people welcomed him with numerous potteries of raccoon dogs on the road.  Since he was a big fan of the animal since he was very little, he got very surprised and deeply moved, and he sang a song about this episode.  This story spread all over Japan, and raccoon dogs or “Tanuki” in Japanese had come to mean “good luck”.  A raccoon dog holding a sake decanter in his right hand, passbook in left, with his head tilted and straw hat on his head, is a traditional design of Japanese pottery of good charm which is believed to bring 8 special lucks to people.  “Yu” in Japanese means “hot water”, “playful”, or “friends”, and these three words are written on his stomach.  SInce these three words are pronounced the same as “You” in English.    Our wish is put in the raccoon dog’s stomach for all the customers well-being and good luck!
